No, no, I’m sorry, I can’t right now…it’s dancey-dance time! April 30, 2008
Posted by thomas in : Uncategorized , 3 commentsJust in case there was any question as to what kind of dance I’d be doing while listening to “Sometimes you Win, Sometimes you Lose” (yesterday’s post), here you go:
It’s very dissapointing that the audio gets cut off at the end of the video, but I’m pretty sure what Elijah Wood says before he breaks into some sort of awkward moonwalk is:
“Go…CRAAAZY!!”
That or, “I’m crazy.”
Either way, like me, you’ve just learned a new dance, and a developed a new goal in life: to one day be the special dancey-dance friend in the land of Yo Gabba Gabba.

PLAYOFFS! PLAYOFFS! PLAYOFFS! April 19, 2008
Posted by thomas in : sports , 2 commentsFor those of you interested (and I fully expect ALL nine of you to be interested), the much esteemed Harrison Mooney and I currently have a little competition over on his blog to see who can better predict the future of the NBA playoffs (by reading the entrails of sacrificial goats - although I can only speak for my own methods) in what has been one of the best NBA seasons in recent memory.
So, if this image sets your heart all atwitter with a combination of joy/frustration/rage/exultation/angst/heartfelt-manly-man-love:

Then you should check it out here as we engage in punditry and risk the shame of your collective condemnation and ridicule.
And/or your general sports apathy.

Posted by thomas in : Uncategorized , 1 comment so far To be honest, the task I’ve set for myself with my proposal of a little political series has completely spiraled out of my control. When I first considered the idea I was filled with more enthusiasm and energy than a college sophomore at an Obama rally, but, as I set out on trying to actually write down some thoughts I began feeling more brittle and worn than John McCain’s 71 year old feet after a long day of campaigning. The simple fact is that while I would like to be as fair as possible and present a wide ranging and well-documented perspective of the spectrum of opinion on each issue before offering my own engagement and interpretation it takes time and motivation I simply do not have. I lack the political fanaticism necessary to spend every minute of my free time trolling the political blogosphere, standing in the aisles of my local Best Buy scanning the cable news networks for the newest policy updates, or reading the latest crop of left, right and beyondist (as in “beyond the left and right debate” - which always turns out, very dissapointingly, to be simply a new left or right) political commentary. And it’s not because I’m opposed to standing in the aisles of Best Buy watching a middle aged man trying creative ways to cover up his receding hairline (and whatever he really thinks about an issue) on a ninety inch plasma screen; it’s more that for every two minutes of actual information I would glean I would have to sit through an hour of ridiculous posturing, condescension and pleas for sympathy for the abuse suffered at the hands of whoever happens to be on the other side of the ideological fence. Posted by thomas in : sports , 1 comment so farIn honor of the final night of the NBA regular season, I give you this gem offered by the seven foot Aussie, Andrew Bogut. It makes me laugh (every time I watch it) and it’s a good lesson for the kids out there: when your teammates ignore you, you can always high-five yourself.
Hoodlums and the like April 7, 2008
Posted by thomas in : Uncategorized , add a comment Recently thomascairns.com was accosted by a spot of spam - and I sincerely apologize if it cluttered up your RSS feed at all with strangely irrelevant and obtuse praise/criticism and scandalous links. In the real world vandalism often occurs with spray paint or expressions of brute force, on the internet it happens with salted mystery meat. So if you do make any comments in the near future it may take some time for them to show up until I can figure out a good way to stop those hoodlum spam-bots.But wait! Comments? Thomas, please, for us to comment, you must first post something. For the the tree of discussion and argument to flourish there must be a seed planted in the form of a reasonably coherent and engaging blog post - wasn’t there some sort of political musings promised? (Please take the “tree of discussion and argument” metaphor as an invitation for increased use of such faux-new-agey-haiku imagery in your comments).
Well, to be honest, it feels as though I have been completely owned by life lately (please take the “owned by life” statement as an invitation for increased use of redneck Albertan language in your comments - as in “you totally got owned by that mechanical bull). However, by the end of this coming week I am hoping that perhaps things will regain some semblance of normalcy and I might be able to carve out a few moments for the peculiar brand of self-expression/humiliation that this blog allows; in which case, my warnings about a potential lag in your comments appearing would be something more than a terrifically dull and ironic joke.
For now though, I reccommend swaying and twirling flags in the few hours of sunshine you are able to find in this pseudo-spring that currently afflicts the pacific northwest (or great Canadian pacific southwest) while listening to/singing the following song:
