Carcassonne: The Television Commercial July 1, 2008
Posted by thomas in : Uncategorized , 5 comments During a recent game of Carcassonne (pronounced “Carcass Zone” by anyone who knows anything) with my good friend Michael Harloff (he of the music and frequent mustaches), I decided that the iconic German board game would definitely benefit from a Tyco R/C inspired television commercial. When I was a kid I would have gladly parted with my left thumb and sense of smell in exchange for a remote controlled vehicle of any kind; the super caffeineted tv commercials for children’s toys only fueled my passionate hysteria. However, I saw the majority of these commercials on video tapes of cartoons sent to me in Pakistan by North American relatives, and the prospect of owning my own Tyco R/C Rebound remained nothing but a fevered pipe dream that manifested itself in seizure like symptoms. So, in that spirit, I hope that the following outline for “Carcassonne: The Television Commercial” has the potential to inspire the same spirit of crass materialism and unrequited desire in today’s children that Tyco R/C commercials once inspired in me. Posted by thomas in : Uncategorized , 6 comments So this a list, because we all love lists, and we all compulsively read them on blog posts and restaurant menus and public washroom walls. Lists provide some sense of order and purpose to otherwise mundane and disparate elements of our lives. This list describes some of my favorite songs of the current year, which is already half over (a fact I find kind of shocking and unbelievable). Anyway, these songs were not necessarily released this year, but they’ve made their way through my party shuffle playlist frequently at different points the past six months, causing me to do a party shuffle of my own (think of a cross between Elijah Wood’s dancy dance and this), and I wanted to share. So, in no particular order, I present to you, the list: (more…)Feats of strength, streams of profanity and more! June 6, 2008

Pictured above: Kevin Garnett in a moment of elation.
A while back I had a post about vocation, golf, apocalypse, and NFL linebacker Shawne Merriman. I just wanted to take this opportunity to say that I think Kevin Garnett deserves consideration in the discussion of professional sports figures turned potential post-apocalyptic warlords.
Also, Celtics in 7. (Your thoughts Harrison? I know, we have slacked mightily in our basketball analysis.)
For any others on the job hunt, feast your eyes on this! June 2, 2008

Posted by thomas in : Commentary , 3 comments A group of leading evangelicals released an “Evangelical Manifesto” earlier this month at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., to somewhat limited fanfare (well, at least I didn’t really hear much about it until today but I have been spending a lot of time in the wilds of central Alberta/watching ESPN and drowning in a pit of unemployed self-loathing), although there have been various articles/interviews in the Guardian, USA Today, NPR, and the Associated Press and beyond - all focusing largely on the political aspects of the document. Which, I have to say, is not surprising given the timing and location of its release - and the relative lack of theological interest/acumen of its initial journalist audience (yes, I do think the media’s exposition and understanding of theology - Muslim, Christian and otherwise - does usually suck. Also I did just use the word “acumen”). But more on that in a moment.Other ways I use my time when I tire of updating my resume or convincing strangers on the phone that I am really a barrel of laughs who will make their workplace amazing and totally awesome… May 29, 2008
Posted by thomas in : Uncategorized , add a commentOver HERE they’re talking about Mark Steyn and human rights commissions and all that fun exciting stuff (hush - no need to try and hide your excitement, I know many of you absolutely feed on this sort of thing). Anyway, since I’ve moved past my Yo Gabba Gabba and haiku unemployment phases (or here’s to hoping) I’ve recently taken to leaving inordinately long blog comments. My comment on Mr. Steyn’s alleged hate speech is posted below to incite your rage/approval and I invite you to join the discussion/debate by clicking here, or that other “HERE” up there, in line number 1.
